SF Camerawork presents a pop-up series of lens-based projects by artists creatively responding to our current state of quarantine, curated by artist, curator and SFC member Victoria Mara Heilweil. Today’s post features artist Irene Carvajal.
Victoria Mara Heilweil: In the silence of shelter in place, Irene Carvajal is thinking about language, and the human need and desire to communicate. In her video, she flashes a light in morse code to spell out the word silence. The light also serves as a shining beacon in the darkness. I love the poetic nature of this work.
Irene Carvajal is a San Francisco based artist, educator and curator, and SFC member. Her multidisciplinary practice includes printmaking, collage, sculpture, installation and she has recently begun using video. Irene’s artwork investigates the political and cultural weight of colonialism, often seen through utilitarian mass produced objects such as clothing.
