CONVERSATION WITH BINH DANH & SHELTON JOHNSON
Thursday, January 25, 2018
6 - 8 PM

Please join us on Thursday, January 25th from 6 - 8 PM for a very special conversation with photographer Binh Danh and author Shelton Johnson about their work and how it relates to diversity and inclusion within the National Parks System.

Shelton Johnson’s mission has been to tackle issues of under representation within the national parks, to bring diversity to the trails, and to encourage minorities to establish relationships with the outdoors. The catalyst for this work has been his influential research into the Buffalo Soldiers, an African-American regiment which served in the Sierra Nevadas at the end of the nineteenth-century and whose members later became some of Yosemite’s first park rangers. By unearthing and sharing this untold history, Johnson hopes to create a sense of inclusion for African-American and other non-white park visitors and hopes to better engage communities of color with the park system.

Current exhibiting artist Binh Danh photographs Yosemite with attention to the complex relationship between the national parks and the non-white body.  In his Yosemite project, Danh uses the daguerreotype to render with exquisite detail Yosemite’s mountains and valleys, and to create a reflective surface upon which the viewer can see his or her own reflection superimposed upon the landscape. For Danh, who is Vietnamese-American, the reflective quality of the daguerreotype is highly important in that it specifically allows immigrants and minorities to see their own body as part of the natural American landscape.

Join us in the gallery on Wednesday, February 28th, with photographers Scott Strazzante and Ben Molina. The Storytellers lecture series is curated in collaboration with Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer Judy Walgren and presents cutting-edge photographers from across the country whose approach to visual storytelling often blurs the lines between journalistic, documentary, and fine art photography. The "story" embedded in a photograph or group of photographs is what creates the understanding and connection between audience and photograph. Photojournalism has been the cornerstone of this narrative approach to image-making, but with shifting trends in photography production and consumption, Storytellers aims to broaden the conversation in and about successful modes of photographic practice.

Ben Molina is a designer who has spent over a decade working in the print industry.  He currently lives in the Bay Area and works as a pre-production artist and programmer for national public institutions and public corporations.  His photographs have been shown in numerous exhibitions and publications.  He has been involved in the design, editing, and production of several published photo books and zines.  Ben is also an avid photobook collector.

Scott Strazzante is a staff photographer at the San Francisco Chronicle.  Prior to his work at the Chronicle, he spent 27 years of his career working for various Chicago newspapers.  Strazzante’s 23- year long personal project and first book, Common Ground, has been featured in National GeographicMother Jones, and New York Times’ Lens Blog, and has won BOP’s Best Feature Video and POYi’s Community Awareness Award. In 2017, Strazzante published his second book, Shooting from the Hip, a collection of iPhone Hipstamatic images. Strazzante is a former POY/NPPA National Newspaper Photographer of the Year, an 11-time Illinois Photographer of the Year, and was part of a Chicago Tribune team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for investigative journalism.

STORYTELLERS LECTURE SERIES
Brian Frank and Talia Herman
Curated by Judy Walgren

6 - 8 PM

Join us in the gallery on Tuesday, May 15th, with photographers Brian Frank and Talia Herman for our Storytellers Lecture Series.  The Storytellers lecture series is curated in collaboration with Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer Judy Walgren and presents cutting-edge photographers from across the country whose approach to visual storytelling often blurs the lines between journalistic, documentary, or fine art photography.

Talia Herman is a freelance photographer and member of the Everyday Bay Area Collective.  A Northern California native, she earned a BA from Eugene Lang College and is a graduate of the International Center of Photography's Documentary and Photojournalism Program in New York City. Her clients include NPR, The New York Times, and California Sunday Magazine, among others.

Brian Frank, a 2017 CatchLight Fellow, has worked on social documentary projects across the Americas that focus on cultural identity, social inequality, violence, workers rights, and the environment. Frank’s latest work takes a close, hard look at a slice in time at Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp before it disappears. Who are the boys that make up the camp? What are their common stories and why do they deserve a chance to be heard? Many in the camp will disappear just as Pine Grove is disappearing. It is a photographic essay that explores not only the bonds of brotherhood they share, but also the loneliness they feel, knowing that the odds are stacked against them, waiting just on the other side of the trees which form their prison walls.
