Please join us on January 15, 2015 for a roundtable discussion with exhibiting artists Michael Shindler and Kerry Mansfield. Joining the artists will be Kaushik Roy, Executive Director of the Shanti Project, Kelsey Crowe, Founder of Help Each Other Out, and Shaney Jo Darden, Founder and CEO of The Keep A Breast Foundation. The panel will discuss the potential uses of photography as a tool to cope with and share experiences of breast cancer, and how these stories may be accessed by others in their health and care giving communities.

IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT 8X10 WORKSHOP

SF Camerawork is excited to be hosting an 8x10 workshop withImpossible Project and FotoFilmic on January 20, 2015 from 6 - 9 PM. This three-hour workshop will offer hands-on demonstration on how to use an 8x10 camera with 8x10 Impossible Project instant film, and a practice session where all participants get to shoot their own take and keep portrait. There is room for up to 15 participants. Registration costs, which cover use of all photographic equipment, film and related gear is $95 to the public and $75 to current SF Camerawork members.

On "Priviate" British curator David Campany writes, "For her fifth book with Steidl, Mona Kuhn has entered the heart of the American desert and returned with a sequence of pictures that is seductive, enigmatic and a little unsettling. Private proposes a world in which concrete reality and the imaginary are one. Plants and animals on the edge of survival, sun-drenched landscapes and wind-sculpted earth are intercut with a series of nudes that push Kuhn's renowned sensitivity to human form into unexpected directions. The results is a book somewhere between the poetry of TS Eliot, the cinema of Robert Altman, and a lucid dream."

SF Camerawork is excited to be partnering with the San Francisco branch of Open Show, on a one night event and show, Road Trip - The Stories Behind the Journey. Road trips are not so much about the destination as they are about the journey getting there. Some folks know exactly where they're going and others play it by ear. Whether you packed up the car, jumped on a motorcycle or hopped on a bus, the road trip offers us an opportunity to discover new places as well as ourselves. Open Show is now accepting submissions of your latest road trip, so share with us the stories behind your journey.

Open Show is a global movement of live events where the public can see compelling work and interact directly with photographers, filmmakers and multimedia producers in high‐profile spaces. Their shows are organized by local volunteer teams featuring 5 curated presenters (from students to award-winning professionals) projecting a 20 image project or 3‐8 minute film with real-time audience questions and feedback. They accept diverse genres including reportage, art, commercial, historical and more.

At this month's critique photographer Charlotte Niel shared her Central Valley photography project, part of which focuses on a young boy named Xavier who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis. Daniel Coburn and Timothy Archibald will discuss their recent books and photographic projects that center on the topic of family. Both photographers collaborate with loved-ones to make images that challenge and redefine the notion of the ideal family. They will address the rewards and challenges associated with making photographs of immediate family members and discuss how the collaborative effort can be transformative and cathartic.

The Hereditary Estate is the first major monograph by Daniel Coburn and functions as a ten year retrospective and as a conceptual work of art. Coburn's work and research investigates the family photo album employed as the visual infrastructure for the flawed ideology of the American Dream. Using photographs made over the last date, and altered amateur photographs, he waves a family narrative that is simultaneously beautiful and terrifying.

HOME, by Timothy Archibald, begins with a rainbow. In the pages that follow we see his children dig a hole, appear and disappear, fall down and rise up. Photographed during the dissolution of his marriage, HOME looks at presence and absence; it considers what is constant and how things change. It shows us that home, after all, is not really a place but a feeling.

2015 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient Kim Stringfellow will present The Mojave Project, a work-in-progress exploring the physical, geological and cultural landscape of the Mojave Desert at SF Camerawork on Friday, June 12, 2015, 6 to 8 PM. Project contributor Phil Klasky, a humanities expert and activist associated with this project that is funded by the Cal Humanities California Documentary Fund, will join her.

The Mojave Project reconsiders and establishes multiple ways in which to interpret this unique and complex landscape, through association and connection of seemingly unrelated sites, themes, and subjects thus creating a speculative and immersive experience for its audience. The initial phase of the project is designed to make ongoing research transparent, inviting the audience into the conversation as the project develops.

Funding for The Mojave Project is provided through a Cal Humanities 2015 California Documentary Project production grant with additional support from San Diego State University. The Mojave Project is a project of the Pasadena Arts Council's EMERGE Program. The Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Assocation and KCET Artbound are project partners. They competed project, exhibit and publication will be launched at MOAH (Museum of Art & History) in Lancaster, CA in March 2017.

This summer SF Camerawork teams up with LensCulture to host our Annual Juried Show. The theme this year is HEAT. 

HEAT registers the volatility and restlessness that comes with long hot summers: violent crime rates increase, leases expire and people seek new homes, global weather changes signal an alarm, and warm summer days bring adults and children alike into the streets, parks, and beaches. SF Camerawork invites artists to submit work that responds to HEAT: the social, political, and climatic conflicts arising in rapidly changing environments. Following the lead of social and political advocates around the world, SF Camerawork asks artists working at all levels in photography to participate.
