Edition 2/5, signed, verso
Unframed

Estimated value: $4,000

The photograph Ladybird, Ladybird is part of a photographic series the artist produced from 1988 to 1991. The work re-creates the cinematic and theatrical sets of her childhood escape into films and books and explores girlhood as both a site of resistance and a constructed performance. It was made while the artist was contributing to the dialogs and critiques that led to the feminist movement called riot grrrl. The artist chose this piece not only because it literally embodies the title of this auction honoring her beloved colleague Chris Johnson, but also because it is the first photograph she created using a 4x5 view camera, a tool that Chris has been teaching young artists how to use for decades.
