From the series titled “4.5 billion years a lifetime” (which is the estimated life of the earth). The work is an attempt to grapple with the unmeasurable through images. The series as a whole is composed of cyanotypes of the sky, handmade silver gelatin prints, and a video work.

About the Artist:
Sean McFarland

Sean McFarland (b.1976, California) received an MFA from California College of the Arts, Oakland (2004), and a BS from Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA (2002). His solo exhibitions include San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY; San Francisco Camerawork; and White Columns, New York.

His work has been included in group exhibitions at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley, CA; George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY; The Photographer’s Playspace, Aperture, New York; and Bay Area Now 6, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. His work is in the permanent collections at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; George Eastman Museum; and Milwaukee Art Museum.

McFarland has received numerous awards, including the SECA Award from San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2017), the Eureka Fellowship (2011), the Baum Award for an Emerging American Photographer (2009), and the John Gutmann Photography Fellowship (2009). He lives in San Francisco and is an assistant professor of art at the School of Art at San Francisco State University.
