I created this piece as part of a wider body of work during the COVID 19 quarantine. The image was made in the back bedroom of my home in San Francisco, a place I rarely spend much time in. It provided me with a quiet place for meditation and reflection. There was something tangible that I craved during this time of grief, loss, and fear. I found strength in being able to hold and see myself during this time.

Five images from this body of work were shared in the New York Times Sunday, June 21, 2020, “Sources of Self Regard” with accompanying essay “Looking Inward, Looking Outward” by Deborah Willis.

Erica Deeman (b. 1977) lives and works in San Francisco, CA. Deeman received a Bachelor of Arts, Public Relations, degree in 2000 from Leeds Beckett University, Leeds, UK and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Photography, degree in 2014 from Academy of Art, San Francisco, CA.
