Amanda Marchand
Hart's Tongue, from the series "The World is Astonishing with You in It: 21st Century Field Guide to the Birds, Ferns and Wildflowers," 2019
Estimated Value: $2,000

Archival pigment print, hand cut and re-assembled; 4 panels; Kodak Polyfiber FD FB
18.5 x 15 inches
Unframed
Edition 2/3
Signed, verso
Donated by the artist, courtesy of Traywick Contemporary.

This piece is from the artist’s recent series of collaged lumen prints, a camera-less process made with black and white photo papers which turn a different latent color depending on paper brand and type.

Using actual vintage books -- North American Field Guides to birds, ferns and wildflowers -- she marks/exposes the paper, making one mark per panel. She hand cuts the papers and re-assembles them into shapes and patterns, in image variations of 3.

Each title references a species of bird, fern or wildflower that is endangered or disappearing. The work has been completed over the last two years at various artist residencies, out of doors, in nature -- with a slow, meditative process of "marking the papers in sunlight with time.”
