SF CAMERAWORK BENEFIT ART AUCTION 2023
September 15 – 30, 2023

Friends, artists, and supporters - we are beyond pleased to announce the return of our Benefit Auction, returning to in-person festivities for 2023. Join us on September 30th to celebrate SF Camerawork’s artist community, its legacy, and its future in our new home at Fort Mason and under the leadership of SF Camerawork's new Executive Director, Aay Preston-Myint. This year’s inspiring auction features the work of over 50 critically-acclaimed photographic artists from around the world and the Bay Area, including Awoiska van der Molen, Wesaam Al-Badry, John Chiara, Nigel Poor, Kija Lucas, Lucas Foglia, and Chloe Sherman.

For 49 years, SF Camerawork has remained a vital arts organization uniquely poised to present new ideas in photography, and to provide unique opportunities to artists not otherwise found in commercial galleries or museums. Join us to honor, and collect works from, established artists who got their start with SFC and emerging artists shaping today’s visual culture.

Dear Friends, Artist, Members, and Supporters,

Thanks and congratulations to the whole SF Camerawork community for a creating a wonderful Benefit Auction and for bringing joy and generosity to our first in-person fundraiser in years!

50 artists contributed works to this year’s auction, represented both independently and by more than a dozen partner galleries here in the Bay Area and across the country. Together, with your bids, we raised over $150,000 dollars, with artists opting in to up to a 40% commission on art sales totaling $25,000 distributed directly to artists. No small thanks goes to one of our most successful host committees to date, who raised nearly $40,000 early on.

As one of the newest members of the SF Camerawork team, I have been impressed to no end by the dedication of our community to the photographic arts and to Bay Area artists. Without your support, we could not maintain initiatives such as creating a sparkling new home at Fort Mason, providing free exhibitions and critiques, and doubling or even tripling our artist fee schedule since reopening in 2022. Your contributions sustain us as we continue to rebuild and expand our programming and partnerships.

Whether our auction was your first Camerawork experience or one of many, I hope to see you again for your critical support, energy, enthusiasm and feedback. If you haven’t already, consider a membership for yourself or a friend to stay close and informed about openings, events and special access to programming.

Speaking of which, I hope to see you at the reception for our next show, sweat + dirt, a solo exhibition by Bay Area photographer Charles Lee documenting Black rodeo life in  the U.S. sweat + dirt opens its doors on November 7, with the public reception happening on Friday, November 10th from 6-8pm.

as always, in gratitude.

Aay Preston-Myint
Executive Director, SF Camerawork
