Artist Toolkit Series: Grant Writing For Artists Part One

San Francisco Camerawork kicked off its new Artist Toolkit Series with Grant Writing for Artists hosted by Ellen Lake from Kala Art Institute. Grant Writing for Artists is a presentation and workshop series offered in two parts.
Part one of this series was a grant writing strategies presentation to explain what makes a solid grant proposal as well as mistakes to avoid. CV’s, proposal formats, budget, evaluation methodology and more were discussed. In addition, Lake introduced grant opportunities and residency resources including Kala’s own residencies and grants.
ABOUT ELLEN LAKE
Ellen Lake co-directs Kala Art Institute with the Artistic Director, Mayumi Hamanaka. In addition, she oversees the business office and development efforts at Kala, specializing in grant writing, working with the Kala Board and Founding Director on fundraising initiatives, and creating a productive and thriving organization. She has over 15 years of experience working in Bay Area arts and non-profit organizations, from development, strategic planning, and financial management to grant writing, community partnerships, and public art. Lake received her MFA from Mills College in 2002 and her BA from Amherst College in 1991. She is a recipient of several awards, including a 2018 Rauschenberg Residency award for artists/arts administrators, a 2016 California Arts Council Artists Activating Communities grant, a 2015 City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program, a 2014 Alternative Exposure/Southern Exposure grant and a 2012 Experimental Media Arts Lab residency at Stanford University.
